AC TROUBLESHOOTING

Having a properly functioning air conditioning unit is important, especially during hot summer weather. If your unit doesn’t seem to be working properly, it might help to do a little AC troubleshooting on your own before you call a technician. You might just be able to solve your AC problems without running up a service fee!

However, if you go through the checklist and your unit still isn’t functioning, it’s time to call a technician so they can diagnose the issue and get your AC up and running.

1. Make sure the power is on at your unit’s disconnect (this is the box that controls the unit’s power). You can find the disconnect on the side of your house next to the AC unit, usually inside a grey colored box:
   • Lift up the front panel of the box and notice the plug-in.
   • Lightly pull on the plug-in to make sure it is in tight.
   • If it comes out, turn it over and re-insert the plug-in properly.
2. If the unit has power, make sure the thermostat is set to A/C and turned below the temperature of the house.
3. If no air is coming from the registers in the house, check the furnace filter. If it is dirty, change the filter.
4. If the filter is clean or you just changed it and still have no air flow from the registers:
   • Turn the thermostat to OFF
   • Turn the fan switch on the thermostat to ON instead of AUTO

Check to see if the furnace fan is operating.  If not, it is time to call a technician because the coil is likely frozen and the cause needs to be diagnosed.

5. Your technician will arrive, diagnose the issue, and repair your unit!
